January in Florida.

After my September post I got caught up in hurricanes and holidays and never went back to blog! In my attempts to back track a little, here is my recap of January...

So tropical! In my opinion we had a pretty cold January. But the nice thing about Florida is that there are flowers, mushrooms, and insects all year. One day that was cold, I went to the Enchanted Forest and found all these yellow bugs.

Another day I went to Spring Hammock on a day that was particularly cold for Florida- in the low 50s at the time of the hike, despite being the afternoon, I believe- and found several dragonflies on a dead tree not moving. Were the dragonflies themselves alive? I really wondered what was going on with them.

One of my favorite finds in January were these lace-like mushrooms, "Schizophyllum Commune".

And the fascinating Stinkhorn mushroom, which I had not seen for quite some time. (Although many more revealed themselves to me in February, that would be skipping ahead!)

And a couple other fungi...

Now, to end with some birds! The Palm Warblers are abundant in their winter coats...

The Anhinga look gorgeous in breeding plumage and are actually nesting at Orlando Wetlands with rather large chicks already in the nests!

Northern Shovelers at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge are always fun to watch with their giant beaks...

Osprey...

Green Heron...

Black-bellied Whistling Ducks...

Snowy Egret...

Roseate Spoonbill...

  Killdeer...
