May has been extremely busy, starting with a trip to Colorado. I am finally getting around to posting some photos from my adventures. The first day we went to New Mexico, just over the border of Colorado, to visit Capulin Volcano. I had heard this is a hot spot for hummingbirds and they USUALLY begin banding them there the first week of May. Unfortunately for me, it's all starting late this year. Colorado birds.

Although I did no true "birding" in Colorado, I am constantly looking and listening for birds. I saw many birds that are common there, but still new and exciting for me. I did some little paintings to remember the birds that I saw. Steller's Jay: Mountain Bluebird (male): Mountain Bluebird (female): Western Scrub Jay: Yellow-headed Blackbird: Spotted Towhee: Magpie is another one I saw often... I still need to paint one of them. They are very cool birds.

Beehive find.

Scanning the trees for birds, I found something else I enjoy seeing- a beehive! I love the bees. Once they built a hive in the wall of my apartment and came in through the windows and sockets. That was quite an experience! They had to be safely relocated but instead ending up leaving in a huge swarm that was not like anything I have EVER seen or am likely to see again!

Fledgeling Northern Cardinal.

I was thrilled to see a fledgeling Northern Cardinal on the tree outside my window! Mama was nearby... I watched the fledgeling for an hour before it stretched it's wings and legs a bit and clumsily flew to another branch farther out- then it WENT FOR IT and successfully flew off to a neighboring tree out of sight!
