Here are a smattering of photos I've taken here and there of birds in the backyard. Female Red-winged Blackbirds, we had a large flock one late afternoon. Brown-headed Nuthatch... There is a couple that appears to be preparing a nest in an old dead tree. You know when they are there as they vigorously peck away at it! Mockingjay.

I love the Hunger Games and as excitement for the upcoming movie increases (I hope it's good!!) I thought I'd try drawing a Mockingjay, the fictional bird from The Hunger Games that is a cross between a Mockingbird and a Jabberjay (also not a real bird). It was sort of fun to draw with the book covers being the only reference, you can kind of think what might a Mockingbird/Jay hybrid look like? This is what a came up with... I'm curious to see what they look like in the movie, I will probably paint a more "accurate" one then.

  The beauty of Merritt Island never fails! I can not tire of it. This week there was a new addition, a very large colony of Avocets. I love them, they are such elegant birds. And then ducks, so many the water seems to be COVERED in feathers from their preening!
