Here are some photos I took during my week in North Carolina of the backyard birds. Lovey-dovey Doves mating. Brown-headed Cowbird. A couple frequented the feeder and this male would go to the top of tree and do his mating call and poof out all his feathers. House Finch. Goldfinches galore! At one point there were 10 at the same time. Red-bellied Woodpecker. Eastern Bluebird. There were two pairs feeding babies in nest boxes. Besides the birds I photographed, I also saw Carolina Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Wren, White-breasted Nuthatch, American Robin, Chipping Sparrow, Blue Jay, Northern Cardinal, Mockingbird, Indigo...

The woodpeckers (and other cavity dwellers) have been very active. My Red-headed Woodpecker nested and has now been gone for a few weeks. And what moves into it's nesting hole? The Pileated Woodpecker, our grandest woodpecker around. A pair has been working diligently on the hole, making it larger and cleaning it out. The Brown-headed Nuthatches nesting in another old pine are NOT pleased. They have been chasing the Pileated Woodpeckers away, which is pretty funny because the Brown-headed Nuthatch is super tiny in comparison! So many birds at the bird feeder up in North Carolina! Tufted Titmouse: Goldfinch: White Breasted Nuthatch: Dark-eyed Junco: House Finch: jumping! Downy Woodpecker: Red-bellied Woodpecker: I also saw Brown-headed Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Cardinal, Blue Jay, Pileated Woodpecker, Dove, Carolina Wren, and of course Carolina Chickadee. A Bluebird showed up a few hours after I headed back home! Maybe next time... It's so much to see what will be there every morning.

Took a walk this morning and did some bird watching. All the usual suspects were out, as well as an Eagle, two pairs of Eastern Bluebirds, and lots of little Warblers.
